Chelsea Moynehan - Co-director

Chelsea Moynehan was born and raised in Long Island, New York. She previously directed and edited the documentary short, The Square Circle, which premiered at the Boxing International Film Festival in New York and is featured on NOWNESS. Chelsea comes from a boxing family, and made The Square Circle to honor her father and the work that he has done in the sport. She is a nominee of the prestigious Tierney Fellowship for photography, and a graduate from the School of Visual Arts. Big Moccasin is her first feature endeavor.

The film stems from personal connection with the area. Appalachia is the birthplace of Chelsea’s grandparents, and her deep connection with Appalachia, her roots, inspired her to create a journey through Appalachia as she saw it. She wanted to illustrate Appalachia in a way that was communicable to everyone, to humanize the experience. Growing up in New York, Appalachia seemed like a foreign place, but it was a place from where much inspiration and beauty could be drawn. It’s a place so culturally rich, and even at a young age, Chelsea was able to recognize that.

Andrew Moynehan - Co-director

Andrew Moynehan was born and raised in Bradford, England. He is a filmmaker and artist. His work has been shown worldwide in places including the Tate Modern, London and The New York Photo Festival. He holds a BA with Honors in Photography from University of the Arts, London. In 2011, he was awarded the Presidential Scholarship and completed the year-long Photo Global residency in New York. Big Moccasin marks his first major venture into moving image. It is a loving collaboration with his wife and partner, Chelsea.

Prior to starting this project, Andrew had never been to Appalachia. He went there with fresh eyes and an open mind, and despite the language barrier; his Northern English accent and their thick mountain dialect, he was able to form close relationships with the people of Big Moccasin that will well outlast this filmmaking process.
